all buttoned up // summertime skirts

liebemarlene & madewell

lately i've been admiring the soft, flowy buttoned-up summer skirts popping up all over the place. my favorites are in soft and light chambray fabrics, or a unique print. they look good both in the mini version, of if they hit right below the knee. the skirts are pretty easy to make, given that there's no zipper to add -- just some buttons to the front. and you can even add some in-seam pockets to the sides.

making the skirt would be super simple...and you could even make your own from a rectangle of fabric that you gather around the waist. but if you want a little more guidance via a pattern, burdastyle has 2 that i think are really cute -- one plain version and one with a scalloped hem. as far as modifications go, i'd probably add a few inches to these so that they hit just below the knee....and of course, add some in-seam pockets.

I adore these skirts too. Maybe this would be a good first sewing project for me.

I love this style of skirt too! So girly and sweet, and perfect for summer :) I should try to make one- zippers take me about a half hour to sew in. I am the world's slowest zipperer.

@celticcaston yeah! i think something like this would be a great first project. buttons are generally easier than zippers, and anything gathered is more forgiving than something that has to be straight. definitely try it out!
