knit bow pattern: moss stitch bow headband

this knit bow pattern will show you how to knit a bow headband in the moss stitch (aka seed stitch) pattern. originally, i created this bow a while back for a friend's birthday present, but now i'm thinking of creating these little bows for everything. bow necklaces? and bracelets? bow ties?

the pattern is pretty simple here, and you really only need the idea to make your own. the yarn, gauge, needle size, or following the measurements in the pattern are not critical. make it as big or little as you like. all of the details i used to make this bow are listed below to make your own! also, i have a mini knit bowtie necklace in the jewelry shop!

how to knit a bow knitted bow patternPin It

Materials

- Worsted weight yarn (I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Solids and Heathers) Less than 1 skein
- US #8 knitting needles
- size G crochet hook

Gauge
18sts and 24 rows = 4”

Notes
Gauge, nor yarn weight is critical for this project. For a larger or smaller bow, add or decrease cast-on stitches, making sure to keep the total number an odd number.

Seed stitch pattern: K1, *P1, K1. Repeat from * across.
Repeat for all rows.

Pattern

Main bow:
Cast on 13 stitches.
Work in seed stitch until work measures 5.5 inches.
Bind off in pattern.

Loop:
cast on 5 stitches.
Work in seed stitch until work measures 3 inches.
Bind off in pattern.

Headband:
Using crochet hook, chain stitch 3 ropes about 20 inches long (or size to fit around your head).

Piecing it together:
To make the bow, wrap the loop around the center of the main bow and stitch it together on the backside. Run the 3 crochet chains through the back of the loop and join to the beginning of the chains.

That is sweet! I like moss stitch, it's one of my faves in knitting... The size and shape of this bow/headband is idea--punchy, but not too, too big--LOL! Super! :o)

I happen to have some leftover purple yarn that my 7 year-old is coveting--I'm going to use it to make one of these and put it in her Christmas stocking! Thanks!

I was just wondering how you succeeded in getting the headband to stay on your head? Did you attach the chains to a form, or is it tied under your hair?

This pattern is precious!

Thanks! :)

Hi Kaitlyn - So, I chained the 3 lengths to the size of my head, then attached all of the ends together to form a big circle. (If I can remember correctly, I think I just tied the yarn tails of each end to the first stitch of each cord.) As long as you fit it snuggly for your own head, it stays on pretty well. Good luck!

Fantastic! Knit this up in less than two episodes of Stargate. Kid snatched it up and wore it to school this morning. Big smiles all around. I see a lot of these in my future. Thank you so much!

@mommyk8 - that's wonderful! i know with hand making stuff, i'm always nervous about my recipient actually wanting/using what i make. it's so nice when someone really enjoys something you made!

I made one this afternoon in random purple scrap acrylic and just clipped it into my hair when I went to class tonight because I haven't taught myself to crochet yet. Two people in my class asked me to make them bows too! And I'm already planning on making a friend a bow tie out of one. Thanks for the fabulous pattern!

This is super cute, but how do you stitch the loop together on the backside? I'm sorry, im kindof a beginner :P

simply just take a piece of yarn and a yarn needle and stitch back and forth between the pieces. hope this helps!

I did the bow and loop and instead of chains, I knitted a ribbed stitch headbands and sewed it onto the band. Super cute, great pattern.

I am going to make this for a friend, but I think I will make the crochet "chains" just a little bit wider... I love this pattern! It's short and sweet, just how I like it! :)
