trapezin'

this past weekend for my friend annie's bachelorette party we took trapeze lessons over at the trapeze school new york. it was absolutely terrifying. and amazing. the first few times, we did a simple knee hang. sounds easy enough, but making yourself jump off of a platform 30 feet in the air is hard. after the jump, it is AMAZING. i loved every bit of it. after the knee hang trick was old news, we added a back flip dismount which is pretty easy and just sort of happens naturally.

i think the scariest part is when we started the 'catches'. i'm all fine with swinging around by myself, but having someone else up there who is depending on you to make sure your timing is absolutely precise down to the second, and who expects you to do things like trust him that he has you so you let go of your bar middair so that you don't rip his arms out of his socket, is scary.

this was my first catch. when they tell you to jump, you have to immediately. otherwise the physics are all off and you end up hanging in midair. it was absolutely amazing.

annie, the bride-to-be, was the best of all of us. this was the second time for her, so she got to do fun things like splits, instead of our knee hangs. what's terrifying for her, is that she's not attached to the bar for her catches. she has to let go of the bar, and just hang out midair, before she has the safety of the death grip around her arms. ah!!

afterwards, jordan, one of our instructors gave us a little show. he's been doing this since he was a kid and was incredible, doing ariels and whatever move this was. and actually, all of our instructors were the absolute best. it makes SUCH a difference when you are comfortable and trust the people who are keeping you up in the air. now i want to go back every day.
